Hi Scott. Welcome to live journal :)

You’d also think that a girl who wants to get into med school would be super-motivated to finish her secondary apps, but somehow, that isn’t the case either…
And yes, 5 hours of sleep is plenty before a test. I’m not sure I’ve ever gotten that much before a science test.

  47. saroberts
    November 8th, 2004 at 13:42

Thanks! It was quite a fun wekend. As for the safety award, a separate group of judges look over our design problem submissions, focusing on the 1) inherent safety and 2) engineered safety aspects of our design. So it was just chance that I got both a design and safety award.

  51. saroberts
    November 15th, 2004 at 11:19

Well, I haven’t read the exact proposal for the federal sales tax, but sales tax does apply to normal groceries in a lot of the country. . .at least in Kansas, Missouri, Minnesota, and I’m sure many others. Maybe the federal proposal is not set up like that, I don’t know. But the groceries was just an example. I’m still convinced that this type of tax would make a large downward shift in the national tax burden.

  70. saroberts
    December 11th, 2004 at 17:26

Yeah, basically that’s the thing. There aren’t very many lines. And the lines don’t form a representative sample of the US population. They were taken from invitro firtilization clinics, and as you can imagine it is the more affluent groups who use that. So the lines need to be more diverse. And more of them. I think there would only need to be around 200 to have a representative sample.

Yes, Texas. Common exclamation in the frozen tundra, particularly in the confines of Amundson Hall. Extremely Versatile.

    your seminars sound fun :’)

From the Houston Chronicle, by George F. Will
“The Republican Study Committee, chaired by Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, is an organization of 100 particularly adamant conservatives among House Republicans. Pence, for example, was one of just 12 Republicans who voted against both the prescription drug entitlement, and against No Child Left Behind because of its imposition of federal standards on elementary education, a quintessentially state and local responsibility.

When, a couple of weeks ago, the RSC met in Baltimore to enumerate its priorities, its list included “maintaining local control of secondary education.” That may seem an anodyne sentiment; actually it is a shot across the Bush administration’s bow. It is code for: Enough centralization — we oppose the president’s plan for extending federal standards to high schools. Thirty-four House Republicans voted against NCLB in 2001. More might oppose the administration’s planned extension of its sweep.”

Will is a Pulitzer Prize-winning syndicated columnist, based in Washington, D.C.

    Go Illini!

Agreed on feeling sad about the Pope. Dad was telling me about different Popes from his lifetime on our drive down to Dallas today. I didn’t realize how much of the opinions of Protestants he swayed in addition to Catholics, etc. He was a great moral leader.

Sad about Terri Schiavo as well. Don’t know if the courts were right or wrong either…but it sounds like Judge Greer was consistent in his rulings. (That could have been much worse if he had been fickle.) I don’t think the original ruling was correct for several reasons…but that would take a much longer response. Basically, I don’t think her husband’s motives were judged very well.

    April 3rd, 2005 at 15:18

I agree with you with the Pope and Terri Schiavo. I do not have an opinion one way or the other with Terri, we aren’t even getting half of facts. I do know that if it were me, I wouldn’t have wanted to be in that state for that long of a time.

  132. kim330
    April 3rd, 2005 at 15:37

I think it’s sad that the courts had to get involved at all with Terri. The media skews things for sure, but after following the case for quite awhile preceeding all the recent coverage, I definitely believe that her husband’s motives weren’t right and that he should’ve divorced her a long time ago and stepped back from all this, as he’s definitely moved on with his life.

As far as the pope, his death is very bittersweet. It’s sad that he’s not with us anymore, but at the same time, how can we really be ’sad’ when we know without a doubt that he is with God now? The church is in 9 days of mourning right now, but to me, it’s almost more of a celebration of his life than a mourning of his death. He was a very good leader who I really believe understood how to lead by example of faith. I think the reason he was so influential outside the Catholic world is that he knew how to spread Christ’s love without ever trying directly to convert people, and he was such a good advocate for human rights and peace…issues which definitely transcend religion. He also lead a very interesting life even before being Pope – I’d definitely recommend reading about him if you get the chance.

You’re probably right about the Schivo thing. I just haven’t had the time to learn about the case, not the interest, actuaully. And I don’t generally trust the media’s representation of things. But yes, consistency is key in something like this.

    April 3rd, 2005 at 15:53

I totally agree with you about the Pope comments. It does seem to be a celebration of his life, as it should be. The pope was a good man, and he’s in a good place now. The church needs to move on, as I’m sure it will.

I also agree with you about his influence outside the Catholic world. As I’m sure you’ve figured out, I’m not hte fondest of Catholics ;) However, I’ve alwasy had the greatest respect for this pope as an advocate for peace and rights around the world. He was a deeply religious figure without preaching to the world. I’ll always listen to what somebody has to say, as long as (1) they don’t make it seem like they are better than me because of what they believe and (2) they don’t try to convert me to their way of thinking all of the time. The pope was wonderful at that.

As for his life outside the papacy, I’ve always been amused to hear what he had done. He was into theatre for a while, rigth? And I know that even while pope, he was an avid sportsman.

  136. kim330
    April 3rd, 2005 at 16:17

Yes, he was a playwright, actor, outdoorsy person, etc. Also has been through a lot – I think his whole immediate family was dead by the time he was 20-ish. And he did a lot for Poland around WWII/Nazi times… I’ve been meaning for a while to read more about him, myself.

  137. kim330
    April 4th, 2005 at 10:06

Is it really fair to say that you’re ‘not the fondest of Catholics’, though? That just sounds really discriminatory. Disagree with Catholicism – fine. But don’t take it out on the people who follow it. I know you didn’t intend to have that sound mean, but it sort of did.

  138. saroberts
    April 4th, 2005 at 16:32

Yeah, definitely wasn’t trying to sound mean or be offensive or anything. I do have some qualms with some Catholic beliefs, but I was in no way trying to generalize the doctrine to all people. My apologies.

I really wanted the Illini to win; I liked their team better, and I just really felt for them. But, hey, they blew it in the last 2:30. Well, I’m sticking with my man Roy. And I’m happy he won. I feel sorry for the Illini b/c it’s always sad to lose your last game as a senior. And just sad to lose in general. I’ve heard recently that a lot of the reason Roy went to UNC was family. Don’t know if it’s true or not, but maybe a factor.

I did start to wonder last night if maybe he was meant to be at UNC. Sucks for KU, but maybe that’s really where he should be. And since he didn’t take the job the first time he was given another chance. Of course, I can’t even figure out where I’m supposed to be :’)

And he’s a typical dense guy and doesn’t get it, right? But was “get another McGriddle” the answer she was looking for? 154. carolj
    April 11th, 2005 at 03:07

My interpretation: The girl is telling the guy he’s supposed to get the girl while she’s still available (i.e. the McGriddle disappears pretty fast if you’re not careful). Instead of getting that, though, he just wants to go get another girl (i.e. another McGriddle). So she tries again with the coffee…an analogy which will probably suck more than the McGriddle one!

So I didn’t actually read this whole article (I’ve got stuff to do now), but this is something that irritates me. If a pharmacist doesn’t believe in birth control that’s fine. But he shouldn’t try to impose his beliefs on others. He should at least be required to make somebody else fill the prescription.

  165. kim330
    April 14th, 2005 at 14:23

I don’t want to debate this really, but I just want to clarify something that I think gets misunderstood. The thing about the birth control prescription issue though is not about ‘imposing beliefs’ – it’s about acting according to one’s morals. See if this makes sense: The pill causes spontaneous abortions as a back-up when the contraceptive part of it doesn’t work. So, if I were a pro-life pharmacist, I would not want to provide it to a patient – not because I want to ‘impose my beliefs’, but rather because I believe that I would be held accountable (by God, by my conscience, etc) for aiding in what I believe to be a morally illicit act that does, in fact, harm another person (the aborted fertilized egg). When someone else fills the prescription instead of me, I still obviously think that the pill is wrong, but at least I’m not being forced to take part in it.
Conversely, I may also be opposed to non-abortifacient barrier forms of birth control, but I don’t think I’d have a huge problem with giving that to someone. In that case, I wouldn’t want to impose my morals, because that woman’s moral choice is not potentially destroying another life.
For the record, though I don’t like the idea of gay marriage, I’m not necessarily in favor of legislating it, for the same reason. I think it’s wrong (according to my personal beliefs), but I also think that since it’s not directly harming someone else, it’s not my place to make their decisions for them. It’s also important here to note the distinction between judging the sin and judging the sinner – while I think that the ACT is wrong, I’m not trying to judge the ACTOR.
OK, I wrote this in a very unorganized way, but I hope this distinction makes sense. I fully believe in the idea of moral autonomy, under the condition that others are not harmed by someone’s decision. In return, I would hope that others would respect my moral beliefs and not expect me to personally contribute to what I believe to be an immoral choice.

  166. saroberts
    April 14th, 2005 at 14:35

Thanks for the comment. And I probably shouldn’t ahve brought up the whole abortion issue anyway, because (1) that wasn’t what I was trying to get at and (2) I’m not myself completely sure of what I believe when it comes to this. I have thoughts, but not firm ones yet. I think that what I truly believe about abortion is completely unrealistic to legislate, which is funny, because I see myself as being a realist when it comes to forming the beliefs.
    - There should be no late-term abortions, period. How you define this (3rd trimester, whatever), I don’t know. But definitely none of this “hurry and kill it before it comes out” stuff. Gross.
    - I think women should have the right to have an abortion if they got pregnent via rape or something like that. Period.
    - If a woman is pregnant and doesn’t want to have the baby, she should be required to try to find somebody who would be happy to take care of it. Family, friends, whatever.
    - If the woman can not and will not be able to take care of the kid and love it and raise it, she should be able to have ONE abortion. It was an accident that she got pregnant. She can learn from it. I guess I’ve had really, really bad experiences with a lot of foster care and adoption situations in my home town and surrounding area and don’t have much faith in those systems. Plus, a lot more kids in them then loving parents. I guess I think that the kid is better off not being born than being ignored and abused in this world. This is what I’m not too firm on yet.
    - If a woman wants a second abortion, TOO BAD! If you didn’t learn from it the first time, then you better grow up and learn to deal with it.

So yeah, impossible, but close to what I believe.

I completely respect your views on the abortion pill thing. As long as the person wanting it is able to easily get it, it’s fine if you keep with your beliefs by not filling it yourself.

Gay marraige, or gay sex, specifically. I would feel wrong if I did it myself, but if that’s what does it for sombody else, who am I to tell them they can’t?

  167. kim330
    April 14th, 2005 at 15:28

Yeah, I mean, I wasn’t trying to bring up abortion again, but that’s related, so I felt I had to use it in the explanation.

I understand (but obviously don’t completely agree with all) the beliefs you described, but where you’ve indicated uncertainty, for me what it comes down to is that I don’t think we have the right to decide when to allow or deny life. Same reason I’m against the death penalty. (yay for bringing in another controversial issue – haha)

Also, if abortion is wrong enough not to allow a second one, is it ok enough to allow a first one? I get what you’re saying, but it seems a little inconsistent to me. People do make and learn from mistakes, but often, post-abortive women end up feeling even worse about their mistakes. I think what we need to focus on is educating people so that they can learn BEFORE making that mistake, rather than learn FROM that mistake. And we need to support pregnant women better, because so many abortions are done not b/c the woman WANTS to, but because she feels she has no choice financially, etc. That’s really sad to me that those sorts of ‘fixable’ issues that we can definitely help as a society result in something so grave as loss of life.
I agree that there are problems with foster/adoptive care, but I think a better solution is to crack down on reforming and supporting that system rather than become more accepting of abortion. I know there are a lot of orphans out there waiting to be adopted, but at the same time, there are SO many people who want to adopt newborns, so I don’t think that’d be a huge issue. Finding good homes for all the older kids seems to be a somewhat different issue.
The rape issue is obviously a really difficult one, and I can’t imagine being in that situation, but again, is it fair to punish the child for something the father did? It seems counterintuitive to me to react to a violent act with another violent act. Unfortunately that often requires quite a sacrifice from the mother (even if she doesn’t keep the child), but again, I think it’s often an issue of feeling like she has no choice but to abort it b/c of societal taboo, etc. It’s also interesting that there are a lot of stories out there about how aborting a rape baby actually has had even more horrible emotional effects on the mother, and on the other hand, how those who choose to carry the baby to term end up really feeling a lot of joy from it. Again, tough situation, and horrible that we even need to consider it…

  168. greencrocus
    April 14th, 2005 at 15:35

wow, so i could write lots on this if i had time :) but as is i’ve got work and gardening and stuff to do, it may be awhile. i’ll reply a little to these comments, but i’m not checking out the article, so don’t be upset if i get something completely wrong.

abortion: i’m opposed to it. i agree with Kim about the pharmacist stuff. i think the main problem in legislation and stuff is that not everyone agrees that it’s murder…and if it’s not murder than maybe you’re not hurting anyone (except all the crap it does to the mother…). i don’t think most people understand that many forms of birth control do more than stop fertilization. i can think of some people that would probably be really upset if they thought that they had actually relied on the abortafacient part. so obviously i think more people need educated and such, rather than just handing out birth control to teenagers and young 20s left and right. sure it helps with cramps and regulating the monthly stuff and preventing unwanted pregnancies. i’ve been told about it and offered it but no doctor has mentioned “oh yeah, you could actually kill a fertilized egg using this stuff”.

pro-choice? sure. make it a woman’s choice to have sex or use a condom. raise young girls to know they are valuable without satisfying some guys sexual urges. stop 1 in 3 girls (i heard that statistic somewhere…) from being molested or otherwise sexually abused. raise a girl with accurate beliefs about sex and reproduction. raise a girl to make her own choices. but once you’re pregnant, you’ve made your choice. and you have to deal with that.

gay marriage: honestly i’d prefer it be called something else. what’s in a name? is it discriminatory? i can’t answer how i’d feel on the other side. i think the political part is more about benefits and tax breaks than a real “moral issue”. as i understand it, marriage is defined as the union of a man and a woman. i’m happy to keep that definition but give “alternative” couples a chance to enjoy the legal benefits of being married. it’s not my business to say who they can and can’t be with. why do they have to have something official to get the benefits? because all the straight couples living and sleeping together who don’t want to commit to marriage would want all the benefits of marriage as well. make sense? but, hey, as long as we’re legislating morality i think Christianity has quite a bit to say about divorce that we don’t currently enforce in any sort of legal manner. as well as any number of other topics…

    well, that’s my randomness

  169. greencrocus
    April 14th, 2005 at 15:49

oh yeah, the death penalty. so why is it that i can’t really vote against abortion and against the death penalty? i can just vote for who i think we should kill? but if i try to kill myself and fail i’ll get locked up for attempted murder?

  170. kim330
    April 15th, 2005 at 05:19

I agree about the fact that a lot of people don’t know the truth about what’s in the pill and would be upset by it. Again, education is key. And I agree about the terminology of marriage – I don’t believe it’s even possible to have gay ‘marriage’, because to me, that’s not marriage. But if they want to allow people (gay or straight unmarried couples) to have legal benefits, fine, whatever. To me a civil ‘marriage’ isn’t a full ‘marriage’ anyway, ya know? I think that’s kinda what you were getting at. Oh yeah, and I agree with the frustration about inconsistent life ethics in politics….really, how can you be prolife and pro death penalty, etc? makes no sense to me. I guess for me abortion is the issue that trumps death penalty, but only b/c it affects more people…definitely NOT because I think the death penalty is ok.

OK, gotta go back to class…

  171. saroberts
    April 15th, 2005 at 12:54

I recognize your argument about post-abortive women feeling worse and regretting their choice. It would be nice if our world were organized and good enough that people who felt they couldn’t support a child could be properly taken care of. Like if we had the proper infrastructure and support for foster/adobtive care. It would also be nice if people didn’t have sex and get pregnant if they weren’t ready to accept that responsiblity. But unforutnately, I don’t think that’s something that we’re going to be able to fix anytime soon. At least not in this country, with the political situation the way that it is. I think that there may be a much better chance in other countries that realize that not everything has to be legislated.

I’m hovering on the edge of getting onto my soap box about drinking. But I’m not going to delve all the way in. But here’s the deal. Irresponsible drinking is much less of a problem in many other countries than in the US. And these countries all have more lax alcohol laws. But the US woud be more apt to tighten up the laws then to try to fix the root of the problem. Our societal mindset is what I see as the problem here. We have a law that keeps kids who are naturally in their rebellious stage from doing something that their slightly older friends do and enjoy. So they (1) sneak and do it before it’s their time and/or (2) go crazy once they tunr 21, only causing the people not 21 to want it more. What would happen if there weren’t this stigma about drinking and people could just use alcohol responsibly? You know, have a glass of wine with dinner, even if they’re [gasp] 18?

Back to the rape issue. I’m probably not going to go into this more, becasue I think we probably just have a difference in the core beliefs of what abortion is. But you’re right, it is horrible that we do have to consider this issue.

  172. saroberts
    April 15th, 2005 at 13:02

I completely agree with your pro-choice statement. That would be the ideal situation. The problem is, how do we do this?

Okay, so when I just said completely, I must have read too fast. While I’m sure 70% (I made that up) of the females who have premarital sex (notice I only said premarital) do so to “satisfy some guys sexual urges,” there are plenty of women who want to have sex and enjoy sex on their own where it’s not a submissive activity. Maybe this isn’t something that you’ve personally dealt with, but I’m sure it is a factor. And then there’s the married women who just aren’t ready to have a baby (or another baby), but want to enjoy sex.

But I still agree with your abortion stance. . .I guess I was drifting back to birth control. . .so confusing!!!

I also agree with you on gay marriage. Yeah, so it’s really not marriage, is it. I just think that if we as a society have decided to give a monetary benefity to men and women who are “joined” or married, we shouldn’t keep two men or two women fromg getting the same benefits. That’s all I care about. But do realize that not all politicians share this view. Many think that there should not be any benefits at all, and this, to me, is imposing your morals on somebody else, which I don’t see as right.

  173. saroberts
    April 15th, 2005 at 13:04

How you can be pro-life and pro-death penalty:
    (1) you don’t believe that abortion is “killing” anybody (wait, that’s the wrong argument. But if you believe this, I guess you could be pro-choice but anti-death penalty)
    (2) abortion kills an innocent life, but the death penalty kills somebody who has done something wrong. Of course, how are we go judge them, but that’s another issue all together. . .

  174. saroberts
    April 15th, 2005 at 13:05

You must realize that not all people approach legislations and laws from a moral standpoint as we’ve been discussing. Some people just see that it’s expensive to keep a murderer in jail for the rest of his life, and we’re out of room anyway. So just kill him. . .he’s not getting out anyway. . .

  175. kim330
    April 15th, 2005 at 13:19

this is somewhat off-topic, but I feel the need to make a clarification/addition. Married people who are not using artificial birth control still can, and do, have sex to enjoy it. Just b/c you’re not using artificial methods doesn’t mean you’re only doing it when you want to have a baby. Natural family planning is just as effective as other methods when learned properly… And, by the way, also helps you to easily get pregnant when you do want to. OK, I’m done. :)

I think I’ve had enough discussion of hot topics for now….

  176. kim330
    April 15th, 2005 at 13:20

  177. greencrocus

i didn’t mean that girls don’t want to have sex. i just think that if they’re sort of giving into the guy they’ll also give into his resistance to use a condom (and yes, many guys are more responsible…but i think they tend to be having sex with the girls who will say “yes, i want it, but i want a condom too”)

so, basically, i think a lot of the people who need/want abortions are more likely to be sleeping with the less responsible guys. make sense? and from my understanding, naive as it may be, there are guys out there who could care less about the girl getting pregnant, and they think they’re more manly or get more pleasure out of not using a condom.

    Great column.

I wish we did not mourn Roy as we do, b/c he was so much more about the man (himself) than about the team and the program (as Self is)…although we didn’t see those flaws exposed until he left.

My favorite column written in the days after Roy left was by Jason Whitlock from the KC Star. (Yes, I normally hate Whitlock’s columns, but not this one!) He said that we had glorified Roy, put him on a pedastal, believed his statements about “the Kansas basketball family,” and known that he was the classiest coach in the game. When he left, and how he left, though, just proved to us all that Roy wasn’t this super-human person, better than the rest of the coaching fraternity – he was “just another basketball coach.”

I do not think we can fairly judge Self’s coaching and handling of the KU b-ball program until it is completely filled with his recruits and his players. Until then, he just trying to operate in Roy’s footsteps, shaping remnants of a team and program that were deserted.

  206. saroberts

    Scott,

The mystery leakage was probably the “The Works”. Most toilet bowl cleaners have Sodium Hydroxide in them, and as a few of the guys at the brewery would say, “Aluminum no likey.” Casutic soda likes to eat Aluminum in a wildly exothermic reaction that generally creates a bunch of smoke. If it managed to diffuse into the soda as well, the carbonic acid and caustic reaction would generate a good amount of CO2. I’d have loved to see the goo that was probably remaining. On a side note, a Mash (milled grain and hot water) plus caustic soda forms a nice German Chocolate Cake-like gelatin … don’t ask me how I know that … :-p

    - Ian

  224. saroberts
    August 16th, 2005 at 11:55

Thanks, Ian. Of all of the people here at school that I’ve asked, none of them specifically thought of caustic. I’ll have to check the ingredients of “The Works” when I get home. We guessed that it was that, since Windex should be pretty harmless. I think I’ll still do my experiment, though :)

Since I just brought my bike up here, mostly due to the gas prices, I was curious and looked up all the Kansas rules. Basiacally, if you’re on a bike, you have to think of it like a very under-powered car. Bicyclists have to obey all of the normal car traffic rules. However, they are allowed to use the sidewalk in certain conditions – more than 100 feet from any public building, never on Mass St., and always yield to peds.
But, I have a feeling that it’s sort of like trying to teach Italians to drive – the rules are pretty much just a suggestion and nothing can change that.

Yeah, I don’t get the complaining about Christmas being on Sunday. I mean, I think it’s easier! Wouldn’t people normally go to church on a normal Sunday morning and on Christmas morning? So aren’t you killing 2 birds with one stone? I don’t get it. Apparently a lot of the ‘megachurches’ around here cancelled Christmas service. Even if you normally would go on Christmas eve instead of morning, do Protestants not have a Christmas eve service when Christmas falls on a Sunday? We still do. I don’t see why they wouldn’t….

If anyone can clear this up for me I’d really appreciate it. :)

  281. greencrocus

I don’t think we normally have a Christmas morning service. My church had two Christmas eve services :’) Kendra and I worked with the 3 to 5 year olds during the “family service” and then went to the 11pm service with our parents. I think most Protestants still have a Christmas eve service, but maybe Presbyterians are special :’) We did have a Christmas morning service today too.

I read about those h.s. girls in our paper. Wasn’t it just a few years back when some other girls died in car wreck right by Arma? Where did this wreck take place?

  288. saroberts
    December 28th, 2005 at 01:34

Yeah, when I was still in high school, some other girls from Frontenac died right outside of Arma when driving home from a baseball game. We all actually heard the ambulences and everything from the game. I didn’t know any of them, othen than knowing the names from school.

For this accident, I’m not sure where exactly it happened, but somewhere around the Arma / Frontenac area, I think. Sad that it happened, but also weird that both of them were from Arma.

  294. saroberts
    January 2nd, 2006 at 14:30

Yeah, WTF! Seriously, the last three times I’ve been in Arma, my flight back to Minneapolis was not only delayed, but canceled! Last Christmas, we had bad weather and it was cancelled. This Thanksgiving, Milwaukee has fog, and it was canceled. And now this time! At least I have a hotel now.

  295. saroberts
    January 2nd, 2006 at 14:31

I even heard from somebody that the engine in Minneapolis caught fire. I don’t know if that was true or just a tall story, but still interesting…

YES! Thank you. For some reason I can never remember the name of that movie. I like it though.

Yeah, it was the Vince show. They played awesome, as did USC. I was rooting for USC b/c of Mark, of course. Although TX did deserve it, I guess I was unhappy to see the “individuals” prevail over the “TEAM” of USC.

  301. saroberts
    January 5th, 2006 at 03:39

And by “team”, you mean Bush and Leinert? I don’t mind Bush, but I think Leinert has a poor attitude.

  302. carolj
    January 6th, 2006 at 03:25

Plus Lendale White, Dwayne Jarrett, etc.

I like Leinart and his attitude; I thought his postgame interview and Pete Carroll’s were very respectful and gave credit where credit was due. Both teams and coaches were very classy.

  327. bretches
    January 31st, 2006 at 16:02

one might argue it’s irony when someone hates listening to the morons after a speech and also writes their own commentary.

honestly, Bush makes me a little nervous too, but ad-hom attacks inferring he looks like a monkey or can’t speak english as well as you can is no different than indicting Michael Moore because he’s fat or Howard Dean for screaming or what have you. It’s not a persuasive argument. For crying out loud, critique his policies all you want, but nudging your liberal friends in the side and having a good ‘Greater than Thou’ laugh at the man’s expense who I hate to say it but beat John Kerry in the popular vote.

The GOP is imploding and democrats have the first opportunity in my lifetime to gain some momentum in Congress, but instead of coming up with a plan they keep with this failing ‘Anybody but Bush’ strategy that worked so well in 2002 and 2004. Dems need to stand for something, not just against something.

Also, you argue Bush is stupid for speaking in hyperbole about ridding dependence on Middle East oil and then you over exaggerate what Bush was saying about training teachers. Maybe I was too busy hating the thought of Hillary running the country in 4 years, but I don’t think he said he’d personally train them.

I know, I know, if I don’t like a blog, I shouldn’t read it. Fair enough. I’m saying your bitterness towards the President could be justified, but trying to justify it like that makes me remember why I don’t take political camps like that or listen to Al Franken.

  328. saroberts
    January 31st, 2006 at 16:17

Ahhh, irony. But I write my blog for myself. If people choose to read it, that’s their problem. However when you’re on TV, you’re there for people to listen. I wouldn’t disagree with your inference that I’m a moron though…

I did not imply that he could speak english better than I. Just that it was poor. And you know he does look like a monkey.

That aside, I do agree that blindly and stupidly attacking a person is not a persuasive argument. I wasn’t trying to make a persuasive argument. I could. But I wasn’t. I was, as you said, “nudging my liberal friends in the side”. And it was fun.

I am truly dissapointed in the way the Democrats have handled themselves the past 3-4 years. The Democratic party does still stand for ideals, I’m just not sure that the people in power quite remember what it is. I voted for Kerry, but I was one of those “better than Bush” voters. And I still believe that my vote was correct. However, the Dems could so so much better with a candidiate. They need to do so much better. Step 1, get Dean out of his leadership role. And I think that the Dems need to realize that their “base” is not quite as far left as they imagine. Everytime they’re appealing to their “base”, they make me sick. And I wouldn’t exactly call myself moderate.

Speaking of teaching, you do realize what a complete failure NCLB has been. It was a well intentioned bill that was not well thought out, barely planned, and not funded. I truly believe that it has crippled the districts that most need the help. While the bill was somewhat bipartisan, it is the Bush administration that has failed in properly implementing it.

Don’t apologize for commenting on the blog. If I didn’t want people to read it, I could make it private. Keep on commenting. But for now, I’m too tired to type (as I’ve already exhibited).

Okay, so you get the part that the chord is a minor one. And when the Eflat leaves, wbat’s left is a fifth. I’m guessing the part you didn’t get is that they were in a bar, so the C and G had a “fifth”…of whiskey, rum, whatever, left to drink/share between them.

Fifth: 750 mL (approximately a fifth of a gallon) of a hard alcohol (i.e. gin, vodka, rum, whiskey, triple sec, etc.). I have a fifth of Jack Daniels in the freezer.

Every plane you get onto seems to have a mechanical problem. (mental note never to fly with Scott!) I went through security in Rochester around 7:45 eastern time, so by then I had already heard it all on the news, which helped since I originally hadn’t been planning to check anything, but ended up doing it so I could bring all my liquids. We got to Chicago on time around 9:15 or so, but then my flight was just delayed more and more and ended up being over 3 hours late. It looked stormy there which worried me that it’d end up even more delayed, but apparently I had already missed the storminess.
But no mechanical problems. That’s just you. :)

  388. saroberts

Well, we got the dog from the humane society, and it was already an adult, so I’m not sure that we know exactly what it is. But I was not aware that it was a bichon frise. However, it does remind me of pictures I’ve seen of your dog.

  392. kim330
    August 17th, 2006 at 16:53

Maybe it’s part bichon…b/c there’s definitely some resemblance, though it doesn’t look exactly like one.

I’ve read a fairly big excerpt from that book. I sorta felt the same way…yes, this is clearly a problem in our society, but what’s the solution? I could ramble more about this but I don’t have the mental energy to do that right now since it doesn’t have much to do with neuropathology. Maybe later. :)

There are coffee drinkers who would be amused with that cup insulator. They would read the ad and maybe point it out to their coffee drinking friend.

Then there are the photographer coffee drinkers who might mention it in their blog.

But you, you are the next level: the engineer photographer coffee drinker who saves the wrapper and scans it as soon as you get home. You, sir, are a rare breed– where coffee drinking, photography loving, and high-tech gadget collecting coincide. If that ad was written for anyone, it was written for you. Congratulations. You win a lifetime of amusement at random things. It’s not such a bad deal.

(It’s ten minutes to midnight, btw and $12 doesn’t seem so expensive anymore. Must…hold… on… If only I had a cookie to tide me over until 2am.)

ouch! you hated him that much? while i agree that he is pretty squirmy, seemed to talk 90% about sex-related stuff, and i’m not a fan of the nose piercing, i still like his music, and no, i was not joking when i said he was hot! maybe he just didn’t look good there. or maybe you’re not a girl and your opinion on his hotness doesn’t count. :-p

i’m also interested that you think CL sounds like they do in the studio. i tend to think they sound SO much better live (not that they don’t sound good recorded.) though echo echo remains my favorite album of theirs by far, i like the new one now that i’ve heard most of it live – just gives it more energy than it has recorded, in my opinion.

  415. greencrocus
    October 5th, 2006 at 21:15

well look at that. mr. matt nathanson isn’t so hot all the time either.

me too, though i wasnt expecting to. i was sad that the few songs they excluded from LLHR were some of my favorites (i.e. block of wood and int’l airport, though i didnt think they’d play the latter)

  424. saroberts
    October 7th, 2006 at 07:59

So I guess what I really mean by “sounding like the studio” is that they have talent. Meaning that the singer can actually sing on-key and the guitarists and actually play their riffs. I’ve seen too many concerts where the band is not quite as good.

  425. kim330
    October 7th, 2006 at 20:24

yeah, i gotcha. that’s what i thought you had meant – just had to be difficult :)

  426. kim330

do you really think it’s that bad of a picture?

  427. bretches
    October 7th, 2006 at 23:21

I asked Terry about Block of Wood. He said they hadn’t even soundchecked it yet. Since they wrote most of the songs in the studio and not on the road, they have to play around with their parts to make it sound good live. Lawrence was where they first played Bright Lights and I guess they’d been soundchecking it for a week trying to figure out how to play it right. They’ll do it later in the tour, though.

One of the audience members yelled ‘more cowbell’ and so Scott started playing cowbell. And Barry was like ‘that’s fine, but whatever you do, don’t ask for more crash cymbol! I didn’t think of it until they started playing the next song but I should have yelled ‘more block of wood.’ Play on words! HA!

I enjoy Matt Nathanson. I think a lot of that is I enjoy his sense of humour. I understand why it would be a turnoff for some, though. Also, I think he’s really talented and I’m excited for the new album because he’s just now learning to write things for the whole band. Nice guy too. Just my taste.

I also cheered for the Colts. Poor Rexy, at least he is still sexy. Prince rocks my world, but where does he always manage to find the twins?

Prince was good. Purple Rain in the rain? It’s impressive that he could perform with as crappy as the weather was. Are you sure that silhouette wasn’t an accident? ;)

I liked the Bud Light commercials. Rock, paper, scissors? That’s pretty funny stuff.

    February 6th, 2007 at 07:24

Ah, finally we don’t have the same taste… I was rooting for DA BEARS! Where did this interest in the Colts come from? Comeon, sweet home Chicago…? And Prince was cool. He could have performed more of his own songs, but you have to respect a man who can walk in heels better than most women!
As for commericals, I couldn’t stop laughing at the paper, rock, scissors one. Another fav was the cute one with the machine that dropped the bolt one day and things escalate until he’s about to jump off the bridge and then BAM… just a dream! awwww :)

you get to see a turtle laying eggs in Minnesota and i get nothing on a freaking two hour night turtle walk at Tortuguero? granted, i was hoping for turtles that are over a meter long…but still.

did you know there’s a Minnesota-Costa Rica foundation? there was a sign by a bridge in Tortuguero. and by bridge, I mean a concrete sidewalk over a narrow stream.

    okay, just jealous.

Oh, Scott. Rookie mistake! Good luck with the new fish! We had an aquarium as kids – I remember that the first fish I picked out for it was orange and yellow and its name was Bubbles. You should get a little water frog – I forget the actual name of them. They’re little and they just swim around, but they’re fun to watch! :)

    July 31st, 2007 at 17:41

  526. saroberts
    July 31st, 2007 at 17:57

Actually, Christine bought herself one of those frogs at the same time we got my fish. She’s in love with it … I think she only did about 5 hours of work at work today, watching it the remainder of the time.

  527. kinnakeet
    July 31st, 2007 at 20:39

#1) I love my frog completely, unconditionally, and uncontrollably. She is my shining star, my nocturnal princess, my heart of hearts.
#2) You realize those fish would have also died in the bag the way they were acting. I was just keeping you from becoming too attached to them. And it was way more than 2 hours. Liar.
#3) If you were well-trained I’d abuse you more.

  528. saroberts
    July 31st, 2007 at 21:39

Yes, I typically think of Sonic as a very forward-thinking company, and I’m sure they’ve hired a climatology team to study global warming and were is a good place to put a drive-in.

I’m excited to go to the one here, but I haven’t managed to yet. I heard there were ~2 hour long waiting lines when it first opened. I might wait till things settle down a bit.

Wow, Scott! It only took like a million tries to log on to your new site using OpenID and leave a comment!

    @de
YES! Somebody else has learned to comment on my new blog. Thanks De!
